Pass or Fail and Kindergarten Conferences
I met with my daughter’s Kindergarten teacher this evening for her second conference of the year. I’m really beginning to wonder what the point is in having conferences or even grades for that matter in Kindergarten. Sure I’m glad to hear that my daughter is not pissy girl or booger boy but aside from alerting parents of childhood idosyncrasies, what is the point of the meeting?
Regardless, in case you’re interested here’s where Solitary Mama’s daughter stands:
Pass:
Academically advanced. (Of course. She’s a frickin genius.)
Helpful. She will help other kids sound out words and get their work done.
Detailed Journaling. Kindergarteners have journals and when the teacher says to write about a friend, while everyone else draws a picture and writes “I like Susie” my daughter will draw a picture and write “Susie is my freind (her spelling). She is a girl. She has blond hair and I love her.”
Fail:
My daughter still talks a lot. She talks when she isn’t supposed to, and if you ask her why it’s because she has something really important to tell someone that she doesn’t want to forget. She receives daily warnings for this and has received 2 red slips in the past (don’t act like you don’t know what a red slip is). I’ve discussed this with my daughter and she hasn’t received any red slips since and her teacher did say it’s improving. All I can say is yeah, I’m likely to yell out stuff too…because I might forget.
Maybe she got that from me? Or maybe it’s because it’s just us and she has the liberty of talking 24/7 to a captive audience. I don’t know, but when I was in Kindergarten I think I probably said 2 sentences the entire year, and one of those was probably bathroom related. I am quite chatty now, but this took over 30 years. She can’t possibly be me….already. Can she?
Anyway, I’m blessed to have such a good kid. My mom always threatened that I’d have a kid that was worse than me. I’m okay if this is the worst. Talking too much I can handle. I don’t even want to think about what may be ahead…
