Well, you’ll be surprised that this is not a post about boo hoo I have no Valentine I’m a single mother. Actually, this post is about recognizing that Valentine’s Day is not only about romance and flowers and candy…wait boo hoo.

Anyway, after an awful experience trying to decorate a shoe box for my daughter’s Valentine card box, I was about this close to banning V-day forever. Yes, everyone knows I’m not crafty but dammit I had glue and construction paper all over the place. Then, I tried to fix it with tissue paper…and glue and when I asked her if she liked it, I thought she was going to literally cry and run away from home. Horrid I tell ya. Thank God for a crafty (and by crafty I mean having that part in the brain that enables you to draw, glue, decorate and make pieces of paper pretty) grandma, who saved my ass yet again by helping my dear daughter construct a very perfect Valentine’s Day Card Box.

Then tonight, while on a deadline, I realize I need to pick up my daughter and let her pick out Valentine’s Day cards. Fine and dandy, no craftiness needed for that. Except the slots are nowhere near big enough for Blow Pops and I kept ripping them. What can I say, I don’t know my own strength. So even though there are only 25 kids in her class, we used up a box of 35 Valentine’s Day cards and a lot of scotch tape. Stupid Blow Pops.

I don’t even have time to worry about whether or not I have a Valentine. If I can just get through not destroying everything for my daughter I’ll be happy, because after all…she is the only Valentine that really matters anyway, right?

So yes, it’s a hard time for single parents, not any harder than a regular single parent day. Unless you count the crafts that it involves construction paper and glue…then I’m out…
