In Somalia, 29,000 children younger than the age of 5 have died in the last 90 days.

And before anyone reminds me of the state of our own economy, or the problems we have in our own country, let’s ask ourselves a few questions:

When was the last time you had to leave your child to die in the desert?

How often do your friends and family go to bed starving?

What does it feel like to go days without clean water?

When did we become so wrapped up in iPhones and Netflix and Facebook

that we forgot

what it’s like to be human?

Maybe for a second we could forget politics and remember that every hour 14 Kindergarteners are dying in Somalia.

What are your instincts telling you?

10,000 children a month. My instincts tell me that as a people, we have some seriously screwed up priorities.

Last month, I wrote about America’s homeless children, some starving to death. I wonder what it will take for people to care enough to change things.

Thank you for posting this. It is, without question, the most important blog of this challenge.

The homeless children here in the U.S. break my heart. We tend to come up with a lot of excuses so we can sleep at night.

I will definitely check out your post. Thanks, Beth.

Beth, I agree that our priorities are seriously screwed up.

I can’t understand how people can strut around in $2000 shoes, carrying $4000 purses, wearing $5000 dresses, driving $100,000 cars, all the while ignoring the fact that our fellow humans are dying due to lack of food and water. It makes my heart hurt that people in the west can’t see past their Gucci frames to do and give more to prevent these deaths.

Thank God for those who are give generously and for those who are working hard to save lives in drought-stricken Somalia.
